Golden Valley Construction’s Role in the Pontrilas Wall Project with Balfour Beatty Living Places
Golden Valley Construction is proud to have contributed to the successful delivery of the Pontrilas Retaining Wall project, undertaken in partnership with Balfour Beatty Living Places. Situated on the B4347 in Pontrilas Village, Herefordshire, this vital civil engineering scheme involved the reconstruction of a 56-metre-long highway retaining wall supporting both footway and carriageway infrastructure.
The project required the construction of a new mortared masonry wall with a mass concrete backing, designed to improve long-term structural resilience. The site presented a range of technical challenges, including managing legacy construction methods and ensuring stability across varying wall heights up to 2.6 metres. The team worked to exacting standards, ensuring that all elements met the specifications set out by the principal contractor and Herefordshire Council.
Safety was a top priority throughout the 12-week programme. All operatives on site adhered strictly to Balfour Beatty’s safety protocols and CDM regulations. Daily briefings were held to reinforce safe working practices, and all personnel were equipped with appropriate PPE. The proactive approach to hazard identification and mitigation contributed to a zero-incident record, reflecting the professionalism and care taken across the site.
Collaboration was key to the project’s success. Golden Valley Construction worked closely with Balfour Beatty Living Places and design consultants WSP to ensure seamless integration of design and delivery. This included supporting core hole investigations and enabling access for geotechnical analysis, which informed the final construction approach.
The team also maintained a strong focus on community impact. Efforts were made to minimise disruption to residents and road users, with clear signage, tidy working areas, and courteous site conduct.
